Fairy Girl

This is a little drawing i did for my niece. Sam (My Professor) is offering a contest of sorts, anybody can submit a picture to his blog (http://artsammich.blogspot.com/)and he will choose one to paint. Let's hope that he picks mine, otherwise, I will paint it myself. Either way, results to come!

Finished

Finally, with a lot of work, and a lot of help, comes a little happiness. Special thanks to Sam Nielson, Adam Ford, Joe Olsen, and Dillan. Thanks for answering my questions and showing the way. Man this sounds like i just received an award. Goes to show how pathetic my life is. Still, this has gotten me excited to do more.

Sneak Peak

So here is a sneak peak at what's next in our assignments. The criteria was for us to design a character, and then paint it. I have no idea what i was thinking so don't ask, my wife thinks i am disturbed enough. However, after watching about Humboldt Squid on the animal planet i have learned that they have one of the largest eyes in the animal kingdom, and are one of the most aggressive animals in the ocean, (tell that to a Great White). Yet, these creatures, and older folks alike, need love too. Now i will have to apply various color to this. I hope it turns out!

Starting Over

So apparently a lot of people have let me know that i never update my blog. Well sorry if i have a life. Actually i don't, it is shear laziness, and lack of self motivation, .....and confidence. I am however taking Sam's Class, to learn and harness digital painting. Other than my Frankenstein cactus this is one of my first paintings. We were only aloud to use one color and paint with all the values in it. Hopefully i get better.

Here is the drawing that was given to us to start

Final Product

So here is my Final product. This is i believe my third painting i have ever done on the computer. I still have such a long way to go, but i am ready to put in the time to learn more. It was a lot of fun to come to the end result, and my process is listed below. So see what it's like to go into my mind and find where the inspiration comes (just remember no sudden movements and no shiny objects).

The Making of. . .

Alright, so i always think it's fun to get in the mind of an artist and think where his inspiration comes from. The thing I find fascinating is how much the "Greats" use real life as reference, and the more i do it, the easier inspiration comes to me. So with this comes the assignment from the Cactus Toy I had posted earlier. The assignment was to take the toy and use real life references and create a Halloween themed creation. So with out further adieu. . .
Obviously, since my toy was a cactus i figured I needed to stick with that. The funny thing is that i didn't think anything Halloween themed would come out of this. Little did I know that the prickly pear cactus reminded me in some strange way an octopus. which lead me to what i researched next . . .
The octopus is an awesome creature with beautiful curves. Wow! that last line makes me sound kind of creepy, as if i was coming on to an octopus. Could you imagine though, having an octopus as a girlfriend? She would be all hands. HA!!!!! alright thats not funny, but still it would suck. (Get it!) Okay, moving on. . . (notice here i had an idea that became the end result in the top left corner. However, i did not know it at the time. I still had more research to do.)
Google is great! I know it is not a real life reference, however, you can find a picture of anything and everything. One of the first things i researched was Halloween, and got this awesome picture of Boris Karloff, which inspired me to make these little Frankenstein cactus.

I like elephants

I would be grumpy too!

Smart Elephant
These are the characters I did for part of a final. In order from left to right we have Lazy-eye Slim, Knuckles, May Bell, and Tex ( who is from Alabama).
So if you look earlier at the blog, one would have notice a catus. It is that same cactus that has transformed into a new assignment that happened around Halloween. So here is Frankencactus. He is angery because he does not like Papaya.

I don't know how long this girls pet is going to live without water.
That's right this was done in color pencil. If one remembers those are pre-computer age. looks like i am a bit rusty.
This really sucks! (for the pelican, if I thought it was THAT bad i wouldn't have posted it)

Just a two point perspective drawing. There is a story to this. however, to make a long story short. This man was tired of being taken advantage of. So out of the blue he found "Land Pirates, villians for hire." in the phone book. For these pirates, buisness was not so good out on the open seas.
This is a one point perspective of an alien invasion.

For this assignment we has to study trees, Rocks, and clouds. Then we had to make them into a character from a picture that the teacher provided. Just another treeman

Designer Toys

In Joe Olsens class our assignment is to create an urban vinyl toy. I guess there is a market for toys that are weird. So here are some ideas.

The cactus turned out to be the final one. It shows my Arizona roots.

Doodles

This little character got such a reaction out of my classmates. This was when that it was finally confirmed that i am disturbed.
Because of the reaction to the frog above, i thought why not make a brother. This is Ernie. He likes to sing.

At work we are working on a commercial that involves a caveman. these were just some early doodles i came up with. I like the Brother Brigham one myself.

that monkey looks like it's about to snap. Don't trust monkeys! ,
This is a result of boredom, while waiting for renderings.

Without further adieu...

Our first assignment, the hillbilly. we were suppose to draw a shape and then make it into something. My wife made the shape, i filled it in. Very few of my drawings make me laugh out loud. This one for some reason or another cracks me up. (this was my first illustrator drawing)

Villians are so fun to draw. They just have so much character.
My Wife talked me into getting a chihuahua (sigh). my brother says i have to turn in my "manhood" card. Well... this is what she looks like. Her name is Peanut. Ryan Woodward character design class. Assignment, draw a dog with personality. This dog reminds me of my wifes old dog Taz. Those things are weird looking.
